LGBT In Michigan

The Equality Caucus of Genesee County continues to work towards achieving our goals in the State of Michigan by influencing policy, supporting LGBTQ+ friendly leaders, and collaborating with partners and friends of the LGTBQ+ communities.

There have been multiple bills introduced over the years in the state legislature to protect the LGBTQ community from various forms of discrimination. Every two years they have to be reintroduced if they’re not passed. Some of the ones to focus on are the following:

HB 4469, HB 4470, HB 4471

Introdcued 4/17/2019, these bills aim to end discrimination by state-funded adoption agencies based on religious or moral convictions.

HB 4414

Introduced 3/21/2019, this bill allows counties to establish suicide fatality review task forces.

SB 351

Introduced 6/5/2019, this bill protects civil rights from discrimination by gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression under the Elliott-Larsen civil rights act.

LGBT Adoption in Michigan

The State of Michigan currently permits single LGBT individualds and same-sex couples to petition to adopt. Michigan also permits a same-sex partner to adopt a partner’s child or child of the relationship.
